Rayo Vallecano defeated Real Oviedo by a no-show in the match that counted for the 23rd round of LaLiga, a duel that was not played at the right time, due to problems with the turf at the “Estadio de Vallecas”. The group coached by Inigo Perez “sealed” the fate of the three points thanks to the “double” signed by Jorge de Frutos and the goal scored by Alvaro Garcia, in a duel in which the veteran Argentine player, Oscar Trejo, returned to the arena in the Spanish capital for the first time since December. The “red-whites” came out much more clearly from the “red” zone of the ranking, but the Asturian team remains in last place in the domestic championship.

Rayo Vallecano and Real Oviedo faced off in the remaining match of the 23rd round of LaLiga at the “Estadio de Vallecas”. The match, which was not played at the right time due to the playing conditions in the arena in the capital of Spain, was able to be played as a result of the club resolving the situation of the turf, as well as the approval provided by the organizers of the domestic championship. In the general standings of the domestic competition, the team trained by Inigo Perez was in 15th place with a total of 27 points accumulated, being three lengths ahead of the first relegation position, respectively, 10 points away compared to the team from Asturias, the “red lantern” of LaLiga.

In the last five meetings in all competitions, Rayo Vallecano had recorded a total of two draws, two defeats and one victory, while their rivals had recorded three defeats, a draw and a victory in the same period. The home coach could not rely on Diego Mendez for this match, and his Almada counterpart did not have the experienced players Eric Bailly and Leander Dendoncker at his disposal, among others. The Vallecas team had not lost at home since the duel against Osasuna, with a final score of 1-3, while Real Oviedo had recorded their last away success, in the domestic competition against Valencia, last year.

The duel that had taken place in the round of this championship edition between the two clubs would end in a “white” draw, in a match in which two red cards were shown, one for each camp and in which Isi Palazon wasted a penalty kick in the second half. However, in the last appearance on the field of the two groups in a direct game, at the “Estadio de Vallecas”, Rayo Vallecano would impose itself in a categorical way, with the final score of 4-1, in a match that would count for a stage of the second league of Iberian football.

The first important chance to score appeared in the 4th minute of the match, when, from a distance, Pedro Diaz’s shot was boxed out of the field by Aaron Escandell, after the ball sent by the central midfielder of the hosts “bite” the turf forward. The second chance for the Vallecas team came from a corner kick that was taken short by Pedro Diaz, and Unai Lopez was there, whose shot went just wide of the Vallecas team’s goal. Florian Lejeune tried his luck from long range, but his shot went wide of the net.

One of the clearest scoring opportunities in the first half came from Pedro Diaz, the central midfielder of the Vallecas team entering the box and trying to score with a shot placed at the far corner, but his attempt went just wide of the left post of the goal defended by Aaron Escandell. The opening of the scoring came near the end of the first half, when Andrei Rațiu’s powerful shot from outside the penalty area was blocked by the away team’s goalkeeper, and Jorge de Frutos was on hand to push the ball into the net.

At the start of the second half of this match, the referee Hernandez Hernandez awarded a penalty kick to Rayo Vallecano after the home team’s captain, Alvaro Garcia, was brought down by a push from one of the Asturian defenders. From the penalty spot, Jorge de Frutos converted the penalty and doubled the advantage for Inigo Perez’s team. The third goal of the hosts was scored after the away team completely miscoordinated their attack, and Unai Lopez’s rebound proved decisive. The central midfielder of the Vallecas team passed to the left flank, where Alvaro Garcia shot into the near corner.

The ball was cleared by Aaron Escandell, but the same captain of the team trained by Inigo Perez was on the receiving end, whose finish, from a few meters, ended up in the opposing goal. As a result of this success achieved on home soil, Rayo Vallecano climbed two places in the general classification, accumulating a total of 30 points and equaling Sevilla and Girona in this respect, while Real Oviedo remains in last place in the current hierarchy, without much hope of recovering the deficit compared to the other teams. In the next round, the group from the Spanish capital will duel with Sevilla, away, and the group from Asturias will travel to Catalonia to “face off” with Espanyol.
