Getafe suffered a narrow defeat, with a final score of 0-1, in the 13th round of LaLiga, against one of their local rivals, Atletico Madrid. At the “Coliseum Alfonso Perez” stadium, the difference was made by an own goal scored by Domingos Duarte at the end of the game, a phase in which Giacomo Raspadori, a player who came on during the match, had a decisive contribution. “Los colchoneros” took “revenge” for the failure recorded last season in this arena and are putting pressure on the teams currently on the podium in the Spanish championship, while the “azulones” remain outside the European positions.
Getafe hosted Atletico Madrid in the 13th round of LaLiga at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez stadium, and before the match, the Azulónes were in seventh place in the Spanish league standings with 17 points, eight points behind the Civitas Metropolitano team. The team coached by Diego Simeone had already scored twice as many goals as the team coached by Jose Bordalas in the current domestic league season.
In their last five official games in all competitions, the team from the Spanish capital had won three and lost two, while Atletico Madrid came into this match on a four-game winning streak. Jose Bordalas could not rely on the services of Davinchi and Yvan Neyou in this match, and the Argentine coach of the guests did not have Robin Le Normand and Jan Oblak, crucial players in the team’s defensive compartment, at his disposal.
In the previous season, Getafe managed to put an end to the positive course outlined by the “rojiblancos” formation between the years 2021-2024, a period in which Atletico Madrid defeated the group led by Jose Bordalas from the sidelines every time in the games that took place at the “Coliseum Alfonso Perez” stadium. The most recent direct duel between the two teams that took place at this arena ended with the victory of the hosts, final score 2-1, in a match in which Alexander Sorloth opened the scoring in favor of “los colchoneros”, but the “double” signed by Mauru Arrambari allowed the “azulones” to obtain all the points at stake.
Of the 47 head-to-head matches between Getafe and Atletico Madrid since 2001, the team from the outskirts of the Spanish capital have won five times, while the “rojiblancos” have won 31 times and 11 matches have ended in a draw. This season, the team coached by Jose Bordalas lost at home to the other “colossus” of LaLiga, Real Madrid, in a match in which the only goal of the match was scored by Kylian Mbappe late in the game, after a decisive pass from Arda Guler.
The duel at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez started with both teams attacking, and Atletico Madrid came close to scoring when Marcos Llorente easily passed Diego Rico, but the visitors’ right-back’s cross was cleared off the pitch by Domingos Duarte. Later, at the end of a corner kick, Diego Simeone’s team came close to opening the scoring when Koke’s cross was headed in by Clement Lenglet, but David Soria was on the post.
The same home goalkeeper kept his team alive when he parried Nicolas Gonzalez’s shot from the edge of the pitch. Nahuel Molina advanced with the ball at his feet and fired into the centre of the Getafe penalty area, but Julian Alvarez’s shot went over the crossbar. Due to muscle problems, Marcos Llorente was forced to leave the field prematurely, and his place was taken by Antoine Griezmann, with Nahuel Molina being moved to the defensive area and Alex Baena being moved to the right flank from the midfield.
Antoine Griezmann was in a good position in the 26th minute of the match, after a sensational run by Pablo Barrios and a precise pass from Nicolas Gonzalez, but the French striker of “los colchoneros” completely missed and went out of bounds. The next chance to score belonged to Getafe, but the header directed from about six meters away from the opponent’s goal by Borja Mayoral was easily saved by Juan Musso, the former goalkeeper of Atalanta.
The ball thrown over the home defense by Nicolas Gonzalez, at the end of a new positional attack by Atletico Madrid, was resumed by Antoine Griezmann from a volley, but the execution of the French player did not create any problems for David Soria, especially as a result of the imbalance of the former Barcelona and Real Sociedad footballer. The second half began with the home team looking to open the scoring, and a free kick from the edge of the box by Luis Milla was headed past the Atletico Madrid defenders by Domingos Duarte, but the ball could not be saved.
A huge goal-scoring opportunity came in the 62nd minute of the match, when Mario Martin’s corner kick was almost headed into the net by Mauro Arambarri. However, the Uruguayan midfielder’s powerful shot was saved by Clement Lenglet after the French centre-back used a sliding tackle. Atletico Madrid created another chance to score against Getafe in the 68th minute of the match, when a cross from Nahuel Molina found Pablo Barrios in the box, but the Spanish central midfielder’s finish was saved by David Soria.
The biggest opportunity in this game belonged to the away team, and the “protagonist” was Giacomo Raspadori, the Italian striker who came on during the match. The Serie A forward was passed by David Hancko, and, not being properly marked by the opponents, he positioned the ball inside the field and shot well placed, to the far corner, but, from the edge of the grass, David Soria rejected the ball for a corner and kept his team in the game. The corner kick then created difficulties for the Getafe defence, as Antoine Griezmann almost tapped the ball into the net, but the visitors’ 7-man team failed to finish the move in time.
Luis Milla tried his luck from a set piece from the edge of the penalty area, but his long-range effort to beat Juan Musso was deflected into the net by the Argentine goalkeeper. The opening goal came with less than 10 minutes left in the game, when a cross from Giacomo Raspadori hit Domingos Duarte in the foot, and the Getafe defender headed the ball into his own net to give “Cholo” Simeone’s team the lead.
Then, Giacomo Raspadori came close to scoring after receiving a pass in the central area from Alexander Sorloth, but the Italian’s shot was blocked by David Soria. Thanks to the victory recorded at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez, Atletico Madrid moved within one point of Villareal in the general LaLiga standings and three points behind local rivals Real Madrid, with the ”los blancos” having played a game less in the domestic championship.
On the other hand, Getafe, following a defeat suffered in the last minutes at home, remains in seventh place in the general hierarchy, one point behind the last qualifying place in the European cups, currently occupied by Espanyol. In the next round, the students trained by Jose Bordalas will play in their own “home” in the company of Elche, while Atletico Madrid will receive the visit of Real Oviedo, at “Civitas Metropolitano”. Until the duel that will be played in the domestic competition, the “rojiblancos” will face in the UEFA Champions League, at home, against Inter Milan.
